Refinery Upgrades Vital to Cut Foreign Fuel Dependence and Meet Euro-5 Standards, Petroleum Minister

by Mahnoor Arif

The Pakistani government is focusing on upgrading local oil refineries to reduce heavy dependence on imported fuel. The Petroleum Minister has called refinery modernisation “very important” for the country’s energy security and to produce cleaner Euro-5 standard petrol and diesel.

Currently, Pakistan imports a large quantity of refined petroleum products. Upgrading old refineries will help increase local production of high-quality fuel. This will save valuable foreign exchange and protect the country from global oil price shocks.

Officials and refinery owners have held detailed meetings to speed up the upgrade process. The new Euro-5 fuel will have much lower sulphur content, which means less pollution, better engine performance, and a cleaner environment, especially in big cities.

The government believes these upgrades will attract large local and foreign investments. Modern technology will also improve efficiency and increase overall refining capacity.

With rising fuel import costs and uncertain global energy conditions, this step is seen as necessary for long-term economic stability. The successful completion of refinery projects will not only reduce reliance on foreign fuel but also create new jobs and support industrial growth.

Experts say the transition to Euro-5 fuel will benefit both the economy and public health in the coming years.
