Pakistan has sought financial support from the US Export-Import Bank (EXIM Bank) to help Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) acquire new aircraft, including Boeing 787 Dreamliners.
Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb discussed the proposal with US EXIM Bank Chairman John Jovanovich in New York during meetings held alongside the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. The talks focused on possible financing for PIA’s aircraft and engines.
Pakistan also requested support for aircraft pre-delivery payments, which could help facilitate the purchase process. The government is seeking to modernize PIA’s fleet as part of its broader plans for the airline following its privatization process.
The finance minister also raised the need for spare parts to bring grounded Boeing 777 aircraft back into service, potentially helping PIA increase its available fleet while new aircraft are being acquired.
Separately, Aurangzeb met Boeing Global President Dr. Brendan Nelson, where Boeing confirmed that it would provide PIA with a revised proposal for new aircraft. The discussions also included options for earlier delivery slots and interim leasing arrangements.
The latest talks are part of Pakistan’s efforts to expand PIA’s fleet, strengthen international operations and improve the airline’s aviation infrastructure. However, the proposed Boeing 787 acquisition and financing are still under discussion and do not yet represent a completed purchase.
