Pakistan could be moving closer to a new era of electric vehicle charging as Chinese automaker BYD reportedly holds discussions about introducing ultra-fast charging technology to the country.
The proposed technology aims to charge compatible electric vehicle batteries from 10 percent to 70 percent in just five minutes, potentially reducing one of the biggest concerns for EV owners: long charging times.
If introduced successfully, the technology could make electric vehicles more practical for everyday use and long-distance travel in Pakistan. Faster charging could also encourage more consumers to consider switching from petrol-powered cars to electric vehicles.
BYD has been developing advanced charging systems designed to deliver significantly higher charging speeds than conventional public chargers. However, achieving such charging times depends on vehicle compatibility, battery conditions, charger capacity and supporting electricity infrastructure.
For Pakistan, introducing ultra-fast charging would require substantial investment in high-capacity charging stations, reliable power supplies and suitable locations along major roads and highways. Compatibility with vehicles already available in the local market would also be an important consideration.
The development comes as Pakistan gradually expands its electric vehicle market and explores ways to reduce dependence on imported fuel. Faster charging infrastructure could help improve consumer confidence and support the wider adoption of electric mobility.
