Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has approved the establishment of the Kulsoom Nawaz Cancer Hospital in Dera Ghazi Khan at a cost of more than Rs8.7 billion, marking a major step towards improving specialised healthcare facilities in southern Punjab.
According to reports published on October 10 and 11, 2026, the provincial government has granted administrative approval for the project, which aims to provide modern cancer diagnosis and treatment services to patients in Dera Ghazi Khan and surrounding districts. The hospital is expected to reduce the need for patients to travel to major cities for specialised medical care.
The hospital’s estimated cost exceeds Rs8.70 billion, including more than Rs3.12 billion for capital expenditure and over Rs5.58 billion for revenue-related expenses. Official plans set June 30, 2029, as the scheduled completion date.
The project is part of the Punjab government’s broader efforts to strengthen the province’s healthcare infrastructure and expand access to specialised medical treatment. Cancer patients often face significant financial and logistical challenges, particularly when advanced treatment facilities are located far from their homes.
The new hospital is expected to improve access to cancer care for residents of Dera Ghazi Khan and nearby areas, potentially easing the burden on patients and their families.
Meanwhile, work is also underway on the Nawaz Sharif Institute of Cancer Treatment and Research in Lahore, another major healthcare initiative being developed by the provincial government.
The establishment of the Kulsoom Nawaz Cancer Hospital highlights the government’s focus on expanding specialised medical services beyond major urban centres. Its timely completion and the availability of appropriate treatment facilities will be important in ensuring that patients receive the intended benefits.
