Football legend Lionel Messi is currently in India as part of his much-talked-about GOAT Tour 2025. While fans across the country were excited to see him in person, an unexpected situation in Kolkata changed the plans for a major event linked to his visit.
Messi was supposed to unveil his massive 70 foot statue at the Sree Bhumi Sporting Club in Kolkata during a public appearance. However, the situation became tense when a large crowd gathered at the stadium. Fans reportedly threw chairs and bottles after failing to get a clear view of Messi during his planned lap of honour. Due to safety concerns, security officials decided to end the appearance early.
To avoid further trouble and still allow fans to be part of the moment, the statue was unveiled virtually. Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan joined the online unveiling, adding to the excitement of fans watching from different parts of India. The statue shows Messi holding the FIFA World Cup trophy, a moment that holds special meaning after Argentina’s victory in 2022.
The statue was completed in just 40 days and has already become a major attraction in Kolkata. West Bengal Sports Minister Sujit Bose praised the project and said it would inspire young football lovers and players across the region.
Despite the earlier chaos, the virtual unveiling helped fans celebrate Messi in a safe way. The incident also showed how deep Messi’s fan following is in India. Even without a physical appearance, his connection with Indian supporters remains strong and emotional.
