US President Donald Trump has shown off a new luxury jet gifted by Qatar. This Boeing 747-8 will serve as a temporary replacement for Air Force One. Trump called it a “flying White House” during the unveiling at Joint Base Andrews on Friday.
The plane, worth about $400 million, was donated by the Qatari government last year as an “unconditional” gift. It was upgraded by US contractors with secure communications, advanced defenses, and features like Elon Musk’s Starlink. The interior includes high-end leather seats, wood panels, plush carpets, and gold details. Its outside paint features red, white, dark blue, and gold colors chosen by Trump.
Trump praised Qatar for the generous gift. He highlighted the jet’s bigger size, long range, and strong performance. He said it would make a strong impression on international trips. The plane will join presidential flights soon and take part in a ceremonial flyover for America’s 250th anniversary on July 4.
This jet acts as a “bridge” aircraft. It will be used until the new Boeing VC-25B planes arrive around 2028. The old Air Force One fleet is aging, and Boeing has faced delays.
The gift has caused debate in the United States. Some people worry about ethics, the Constitution, and possible foreign influence on US leaders. Critics question the high cost of upgrades, which may reach hundreds of millions more in taxpayer money. Supporters say it was a smart, no-cost way to improve presidential travel while waiting for new planes. The White House says the gift follows legal rules.
This event shows the close ties between the US and Qatar. It also points to problems with the current presidential aircraft program. The new jet gives Trump a powerful and impressive plane for important duties right away.
