June 21 is a special day in Pakistan and the whole Northern Hemisphere. It marks the Summer Solstice, the longest day and shortest night of the year. On this day, people enjoy more hours of sunlight than on any other day.
In Pakistan, daylight lasts about 13 to 14 hours or more, depending on the city. For example, in Islamabad it can reach nearly 14 hours and 30 minutes, while in Karachi it is around 13 hours and 40 minutes. The sun rises early, around 5 AM in many places, and sets late in the evening. This is much longer than in winter, when days can be as short as 10 hours.
Why does this happen? Earth is tilted at about 23.5 degrees on its axis. During the Summer Solstice, the Northern Hemisphere tilts toward the Sun. This means the Sun shines more directly on this side of the planet, giving us longer days and more warmth. The word “solstice” comes from Latin words meaning “sun stands still.” At this point, the Sun reaches its highest position in the sky before slowly moving back.
The Summer Solstice is the official start of summer. After today, days will slowly get shorter until the Winter Solstice in December. Many cultures around the world celebrate this day with festivals, bonfires, and sunrise gatherings. In Pakistan, it is a good reminder to enjoy the bright, warm days of summer.
