eSIM technology could soon become significantly more affordable for mobile users in Pakistan, as the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) is reportedly considering a major reduction in eSIM registration charges. The proposal aims to encourage wider adoption of digital SIM technology while supporting the country’s ongoing digital transformation.
According to reports, the PTA plans to cut eSIM registration fees by nearly 50%, reducing the current charge from Rs200 to around Rs100 per activation. If approved, the revised fee structure is expected to make eSIM services more accessible for millions of smartphone users across the country.
An eSIM, or embedded SIM, is a digital version of the traditional physical SIM card. Instead of inserting a plastic SIM, users can activate a mobile network directly on compatible smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, and other connected devices. The technology offers greater convenience by allowing users to switch between mobile operators without replacing a physical SIM card.
The proposed reduction is expected to benefit consumers by lowering the cost of activating eSIMs while encouraging telecom operators to expand digital services. Industry experts believe cheaper eSIM activation could also accelerate the adoption of modern smartphones and connected devices that already support the technology.
The initiative aligns with Pakistan’s broader efforts to modernize its telecommunications sector, improve digital connectivity, and promote paperless services. Increasing eSIM usage could also simplify network switching, enhance customer convenience, and reduce the environmental impact associated with manufacturing and distributing plastic SIM cards.
Although the proposal has attracted positive attention, the revised charges have not yet been officially implemented. The fee reduction will take effect only after receiving formal approval from the relevant authorities and being notified by the PTA.
If approved, the move would mark another important step in Pakistan’s digital journey, making advanced mobile connectivity more affordable while encouraging greater adoption of next-generation telecommunications services across the country.
