Pakistan is home to the world’s highest-altitude ATM, located at the Khunjerab Pass, near the Pakistan-China border, at an elevation of approximately 15,397 feet (4,693 metres) above sea level.
The ATM was installed by the National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) to provide banking services to local communities, travellers, and people working in the remote border region. Its location makes it one of the most remarkable ATMs in the world, operating in an area known for its extreme altitude and harsh weather conditions.
Situated in the Khunjerab Pass, the ATM serves an important purpose for people living and working in the region, including border officials, security personnel, and tourists travelling along the famous Karakoram Highway.
Operating an ATM at such a high altitude presents unique challenges. The machine must function in extremely cold temperatures and withstand difficult weather conditions, including heavy snowfall and strong winds. The remote location also makes maintenance and cash replenishment more challenging than at conventional ATMs in urban areas.
Beyond providing financial services, the ATM has become a popular attraction and a symbol of Pakistan’s efforts to expand digital banking into remote parts of the country. Visitors often stop to take photographs of the unusual facility while travelling through the spectacular mountainous region.
The Khunjerab Pass is also an important trade and travel route connecting Pakistan with China. The presence of the ATM highlights how banking technology is reaching even some of the highest and most remote inhabited areas of the country.
The world’s highest ATM has therefore become more than just a banking facility—it is also a unique example of innovation and financial accessibility in one of Pakistan’s most challenging environments.
