Pakistan has officially named its first lunar rover “Jinnah-1”, marking an important milestone in the country’s growing space exploration efforts.
The name was selected through a nationwide competition that received around 4,000 entries from people across Pakistan. Seven participants independently suggested the name “Jinnah-1,” making it the most notable choice among the submitted names.
A lucky draw was then held to select the final winner. The draw declared 17-year-old Tayyab Karim from Bahawalnagar as the winner of the competition.
The lunar rover is being developed under the space programme of the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO). It is planned to travel to the Moon in 2029 as part of China’s Chang’e-8 mission.
Jinnah-1 is expected to carry out scientific activities on the lunar surface, with its mission focused on the area around the Moon’s south pole. Scientists consider the region important for future lunar research and exploration because of its unique environment and potential resources.
The mission will give Pakistani scientists and researchers an opportunity to take part in international lunar exploration and contribute to space science.
The naming of Jinnah-1 also carries national significance. By choosing a name inspired by Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Pakistan has connected its space exploration ambitions with the country’s founder.
The planned mission represents another step in Pakistan’s efforts to expand its role in space research. If successfully deployed, Jinnah-1 will become a symbol of Pakistan’s growing interest in lunar science, technology and exploration.
