Punjab’s electric bike push is growing.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has approved extending the province’s E-Bike Scheme to government employees. The extension comes after the student phase is completed.
Right now, the Punjab government is rolling out 100,000 electric bikes for students across the province within one year. The scheme uses an interest-free installment plan to keep it affordable.
For the student phase, the government gives a subsidy of Rs 70,000 on each e-bike. Male students pay a Rs 14,000 down payment, then Rs 2,100 per month.
Female students get more relief: the Punjab government covers both the down payment and registration fee, so they pay only the Rs 2,100 monthly installment.
Once students are covered, government employees will be eligible under the same program. They will be able to buy e-bikes through easy, interest-free installments.
The Bank of Punjab is financing the installment plans. The government pays the interest, so beneficiaries only pay the principal amount each month.
The move is part of Punjab’s larger green transport agenda. The province is also expanding electric buses, e-taxis, and electric three-wheelers. The goal: cleaner air and cheaper transport.
This aligns with federal policy too. The federal government earlier approved a similar e-bike scheme for public sector employees up to BPS-16.
