The United States has approved a potential sale of 48 F-35 fighter jets to Saudi Arabia in a deal estimated at $24.3 billion, marking a major development in Washington’s defence relationship with Riyadh.
The US State Department approved the possible Foreign Military Sale on September 17. The proposed package includes 48 F-35 Lightning II aircraft, 49 Pratt & Whitney F135 engines, communications and electronic-warfare equipment, spare parts, training and other support services.
The department said the proposed sale would strengthen Saudi Arabia’s ability to defend its territory, deter potential threats and improve interoperability with US and other allied forces. It also stated that the proposed equipment and support would not alter the military balance in the region.
However, the agreement is not yet final. The proposed sale still has to go through a review by the US Congress before it can be completed. US lawmakers have 30 calendar days to review the formal notification.
The F-35 is a stealth fighter designed to reduce its visibility to enemy radar and is among the most advanced combat aircraft operated by the United States and its allies.
Saudi Arabia has sought the aircraft as part of efforts to modernize its armed forces. If the deal is completed, Saudi Arabia would become the first Arab country to operate the F-35. Israel is currently the only Middle Eastern country operating the aircraft.
The proposed sale could therefore have wider implications for defence cooperation between Washington and Riyadh and for military technology in the Middle East.
