Karachi LPG Price Reaches Record Rs. 500 per kg

by Mahnoor Arif

LPG prices in Karachi have hit a shocking new record of Rs 500 per kg. This has added heavy pressure on families already struggling with high inflation and energy costs caused by the ongoing Iran-Israel war.

Consumers say they are paying nearly Rs 200 above the official rate set by the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA). The government-fixed price for April 2026 is Rs 304.12 per kg, making an 11.8 kg domestic cylinder cost around Rs 3,588 officially. In many parts of Karachi, however, people are forced to buy at much higher black-market rates.

Chairman of the LPG Distributors Association, Abdul Hadi Khan, blamed the sharp rise on severe supply shortages and higher costs of importing LPG. He said OGRA has failed to stop overpricing by importers and distributors. Pakistan gets a large part of its LPG from Iran, but regional tensions have badly affected supplies through the Strait of Hormuz and land routes.

This increase comes even as the government announced relief in other areas. Recently, petrol prices were cut by Rs 80 per litre for one month. Punjab also introduced free public transport, diesel subsidies for farmers, and support for motorcyclists. Yet, no immediate relief has reached LPG users in Karachi.

Households that depend on LPG for cooking now face difficult choices. Many poor families are reducing meals or switching to more expensive alternatives. Traders warn that continued shortages may push prices even higher in the coming days.

The government has been asked to take strong action against black marketing and ensure fair supply. Citizens hope quick steps will be taken to control prices and ease the burden on daily life.
